About the Boat – Alaunt – A Checkered Past

Alaunt, a Van de Stadt design, was built by Southern Ocean Shipyard and was commissioned in England in 1968 for Major R. C. Sharples, who became the Governor of Bermuda in 1972. Major Sharples and his sons actively raced Alaunt and won many races in Europe.

Governor Sharples was assassinated in 1973 and Alaunt was purchased by two brothers from New Zealand. She cruised around the world but was arrested in St. Barth's in the early 1990's for drug trafficking.

The boat was brought to St. Thomas and auctioned off. Ron missed the original bid but finally bought his "dream boat" in 1994.

There are only 22 Gallant 53's in the world. The most famous is called "Express Crusader"on which Dame Naomi James sailed non-stop single-handed around the world becoming the first woman to do so. Visit the website at www.gallant53.com.
